Condoleezza Rice Calls Antipoverty Work...

'Critical' to Foreign-Policy Efforts.

As reported by Ian Wilhelm for The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Speaking to attendees of a meeting organized by
InterAction, a Washington coalition of about 160
charities that work overseas, Ms. Rice said aid is
crucial to preventing the spread of terrorism and
a moral obligation of a wealthy nation.

"In the 21st century, defined as it is thus far by an
unprecedented and increasing interdependence,
human development is both a moral end in itself
and also a central pillar of our national security," she
said. "For as long as civil conflicts can beget global
crises, as long as preventable diseases destroy the
social fabric of entire countries and entire continents,
as long as half the human race lives on less than $2 a
day, the developing world will neither be just nor will
it be stable."

What Ms. Rice is pointing out is the fact that what
people live for has very much to do with their
actions, negative and positive. By creating a world
where people of all genders, ethnicities, and age
have something to live for we create a more stable
environment where people value their life, therefore,
they also value others.

Cancer Research Slowly Dies...

As reported in BusinessWeek, by Geoffrey
M. Wahl, former President of the American
Association for Cancer Research.

According to Mr. Wahl, "The American Association for
Cancer Research has been advancing the science for
100 years. The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
have been funding cancer research for more than
80 years."

"But in a cataclysmic stroke of bad timing, funding for
the NIH is being 'undoubled.' President George W.
Bush's 2007 budget seeks $4.75 billion for the NCI..."

"This winter, the NCI's Clinical Trials Cooperative
Group Program was ordered to cut as many as 60%
of new clinical trials. This translates into 3,000
patients who may be unable to enroll in a cooperative
group clinical trial. You can't find new preventive
agents or treatments without trials"

Don't allow this to continue. Write to your Senator,
write to your Congressman, write to the President
and let them know that Cancer Research is used for
the betterment of tomorrow, for longer lives, for
healthier lives and in the end that's worth more
than all the money in the world.

Mr. Wahl is also a professor at the Salk Institute for
Biological Studies.

The Least Forgotten...

Why does it seem that those who challenge us the
most are the least forgotten?

I was recently reminded.

Dave Brooks has spent his entire life giving back to
his community. He's a Special Education teacher at
River City High School for those students with
mental disabilities. He's also the tennis coach of a
team that is dominated by low-income Asian
families and yet, for more than ten years now Dave
has lead that team to championships and undefeated
seasons like no other. He has taken people who know
little of success and groomed them to be champions.

I was fortunate enough to be a part of the beginning,
the first three undefeated seasons and league
championships. It was apparent then that Dave's
commitment to challenging everyone around him
to be something better was very strong. However,
I never realized the extent of that until I wasn't
around it anymore.

A week back I visited Dave to find him in good
spirits and about to travel to Arizona with his parents
to pick up his sister, who was undergoing experimental
treatment for seizures she had throughout most of her
life. Dave was the same jovial, challenging spirit that I
have never forgotten. He cracked jokes, but was stern
on the court and still contained the same, unwavering
commitment to a team I once had the pleasure to be a
part of. To say his spirit is contagious would be a vast
understatement.

Yesterday, I visited him again to find a different man.

Unfortunately, on April 13, 2007, after picking his sister
up from Arizona and bringing her back to West Sacramento
California, Dave's sister passed away in her parent's home.

Most people would walk away from their lives, most
would want to crawl up into a ball and find a place in the
dark. Yet, there I was, on the tennis court, with Dave, as
he spoke to his team, just three days after his sister's
passing. He struggled with every breath and was clearly
breaking down inside, but refusing to let it get the better
of him.

Why? Because it's the end of the season and again, the
team is poised to take the top spot in the league. Some
may feel that is miniscule in light of the events, but Dave
understands what most don't; his commitment to giving
people something better to live for extends beyond
himself. There are people counting on him and even in
his greatest time of need he's not going to let them down.

He's struggling, but he'll win; his team will win, that I can
assure you.

He's a man of unwavering principle, someone who has
spent his entire life pushing others to be something
bigger and better than they ever thought they could.

And even now, given the untimely passing of his sister,
Dave and his family request that in lieu of flowers,
donations be sent in Amy Lynn Brooks' name to the
Barrow Neurological Foundation, in hopes that the
experimental treatment she received will become less
experimental and more scientific; that with the hope
and support of others, Amy's passing will bring about
a bright future for someone else.

Even in his greatest time of need, Dave will not stop
thinking of others. And, so I pondered why it is that
those who challenge us the most are often the least
forgotten and it's clear to me that anyone who takes
the lives of others' in his hands and never uses 'good
enough' as the standard is creating a better world
that we all should be happy to live in, a world that
isn't what we don't have, but how we can live to
create something for those who have less.

Congress to fund the fight against poverty in
2008. And now we are days away from securing
$39.8 billion - $3.9 billion over last year's
international affairs budget - the largest increase
in recent history.

Six senators, Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Chuck
Hagel (R-NE), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Gordon Smith
(R-OR), Christopher Dodd (D-CT), and Norm
Coleman (R-MN), are taking the lead by writing
a letter encouraging their colleagues in the Senate
to support this critical funding.

Please take a minute to ask your senator to sign on to this letter.

The international affairs budget contains almost
all the funding America devotes to poverty focused
development assistance - the money that so directly
translates into lives saved and countries transformed.
It's not a band-aid for extreme poverty, it's smart aid
that attacks it at its roots. By contributing our share
to this type of funding, in partnership with other
nations, we can put 77 million children in school and
save 16,000 lives a day by combating AIDS, TB, and
Malaria.

You scored an important victory in March when you
convinced the Senate to agree to put $39.8 into the
budget. Now they need to translate the budget into
real dollars. The Senate Appropriations Committee
leadership does just that. They write the check.

Write your senators urging them to allocate $39.8 billion.

A year ago ONE members mobilized around a very
similar letter and 52 senators signed on in support.
This year we're hoping to get 60 senators to co-sign
the Feinstein-Hagel-Durbin-Smith-Dodd-Coleman
letter supporting the largest increase in recent history.

7 Unique Ways...

To create smiles around you:

1. Write an encouraging note to others that have
encouraged you or that need encouragement.
Handwritten notes that are given to encourage,
not just for thanking someone for a gift, are rare.
That makes handwritten notes even more special.
Start a new practice of sitting down and writing an
encouraging note on a regular basis. You just might
start an epidemic!

2. Take a friend out to lunch or invite her to your
home for a meal. You will get to know each other
even better than you do right now. If you feel like
being more adventurous, throw a party for several
of your friends and put smiles on a multitude of faces.

3. Give someone an inspirational book to read. You
will feel good doing it, reading the book will change
the person, and they will think of you every time they
read it.

4. Ask a friend or relative if you can take care of their
kid(s) for a day or evening. If you have been a parent,
you know the value of being able to have a few hours
of "adult time" without worrying about the children.
Don't wait to be asked to baby-sit when it is required.
Offer to do it at a time when the parent can do
something fun and relaxing.

5. Deliver a meal to someone you know that is sick or
having a rough time. We have all been sick and know
the last thing you want to do is be out of bed. There
are also times when life is tough and it is hard to do
all of the daily chores. You can be a tremendous help
by providing a meal that can be enjoyed.

6. Volunteer time to supporting your local church or
charity. Every minute you dedicate to a church or
charity will cause many smiles. You will put a smile
on the face of each leader just for helping without
being asked. You will also be putting smiles on the
faces of those that are being helped through the
organization.

7. Thank everyone that supports you throughout the
day. The list of those that you come in contact with is
endless. Remember family and friends, secretaries,
co-workers, teachers, Sunday school teachers, pastors,
store employees, janitors, gas station attendants, those
that deliver your mail and newspaper, and servers at
restaurants.

Practice at least one of these per day and see what happens!
